EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAM: FIVE STRATEGIES TO DESIGN AN EFFECTIVE ONE

Several factors determine employee’s performance at work: work hours, the attitude of management etc. However, a worker’s health status plays a key role in determining their productivity at work.

Your employee’s physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing can influence an organization’s level of success. Thus workplace wellness programs are critical in achieving the complete wellbeing of workers.

What are the critical components of an employee wellness program? How to organize a wellness program?

This article discusses the five major strategies to structure an effective employee wellness program.

HOW TO ORGANISE AN EFFECTIVE WELLNESS PROGRAM?

CONDUCT A WORKPLACE HEALTH DIAGNOSTICS

The purpose identifies the prevailing health risks, behaviors and pre-existing medical conditions of employees.

Most staff members have medical disorders such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ulcers etc which can either affect their performance at work or deteriorate without an early diagnosis.

To achieve this, carry out health surveys using questionnaires and health screening checks by health professionals.

They should conduct these activities at critical periods especially at recruitment points and bi-annually. Analyze the findings from the health screening to determine the pattern of health risks and medical conditions.

This gives the employer leverage in planning, prioritizing and allocating the scarce resources to the most pressing medical disorder.

SET GOALS

The employer’s goal is to improve the health of workers at minimal cost. The human resource unit organizes and setting up a committee that will cater to the health needs of workers.

The goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.).

An example of a S.M.A.R.T goal is to reduce the prevalence of hypertension by 30% within one month of starting a wellness program. Then the committee sets up activities to enable them to achieve this.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND LEADERSHIP SUPPORT

Functional heads of units should account for majority of the wellness committee.

Communication is an essential activity they should be done to carry workers along. For example, they should disseminate information related to wellness activities to all staff members ahead of time.

In addition, the committee serves as a middleman between the employer and employee to help negotiate stress-free work environment.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

Setting a wellness program does not guarantee improved health of workers. It is essential to keep track of health outcomes using pre-determined indicators before and during the commencement of a wellness program.

For instance, health indicators like weight control, level of blood pressure and blood glucose for obese, hypertensive and diabetic patients respectively.

Furthermore, the committee can provide tools or resources that will enable workers to keep track of vital indicators and to seek professional counsel when there is an abnormality.

USE INCENTIVES TO MOTIVATE EMPLOYEES

Employees achieve company goals when they are motivated and this can apply to their health goals. Incentives can be tangible (Financial rewards or honorarium) or intangible (vacations).

The committee’s choice of incentives is determined by the organization’s vision, mission and goals.

In conclusion, an employee wellness program is the foundation of a healthy and productive team. An organization’s result and performance soar when employees are healthy and productive at work.
